Are you one of those people who is always rushing behind time to meet their deadlines and get their work done? Well, if such is the case with you then this article is meant exactly for you. If you are always running late with your deadlines and out of time to get a job done, have you ever stopped to consider that perhaps something is wrong with your efficiency?
We are at our 5th hackathon for the #VR4Rehab project in Bruges and today at the Sportinnovation campus van Howest.
We have some 60 students from this educational facility. Some on physical therapy, ergotherapy, others on a more technological study.
All in all, we are able to build team from various disciplines which is exactly right for our design challenges in this hackathon.
We are working on rehab application for pain management, lower limb, adherence to therapy etc.
This morning we first had rounds on empathizing with the subjects, now we are in the phase of building our first shitty drafts and prototype ideas. Later today the students will present to a jury and will be judged for a ticket to get to the upcoming Game Jams where the actual workable demo will be developed based on the ideas that emerged in these 5 hackathons.
Just a short impression of a well visited ‘Low-Tech, High-Touch’ event in co-creation with Van Berlo Design in Eindhoven.
Of course it is Dutch Design Week, so the city of Eindhoven is buzzing with activities. But that is just the right atmosphere we looked for when Stef and I got together some 3 weeks ago with the idea to host a meeting explaining the power of design thinking to the challenges of healthcare.
We started with a small tour across the ‘Embassy of Health’. We looked at new concepts for sedentary lifestyle, artificial wombs and AI for Healthcare. A digital detox pop-up store will be located in Amsterdam shortly and did you know OR personel suffers from Alarm Fatique?
We had interesting discussions and presentations around the implementation of a change oriented mindset within healthcare.
If you have time this week, be sure to visit them in the Innovation Powerhouse.
Today we worked with dr. Anne Stenros and ROND from Finland on a very interesting open space format workshop on designing the Smart City.
We first explained the Open Space format to all the participants after which we discussed in a circle the Who, Why, When, What, Where and How of the design challenge.
Then we went in small groups into a deep dive for the specific design challenge, in our case; how do we design the conversation? We went from the Why? to the How and the What and finally pitched the solutions to the rest of the group.
Tomorrow the conference will start. I am so curious to find out what the two days will bring on new insights.
Keep you posted.
Above some views as I cycled to work this morning. It is going to be a beautiful couple of days looking ahead. Today first of all of course the ‘Made by Google’ event from New York and Paris. You can find everything you need to know about the Pixel 3, Pixel 3XL, Pixelbook Slate etc. etc. here on this excellent website.
But there is more exciting stuff this week.
Tomorrow I will be part of the Design Thinkers Conference Day Zero in Amsterdam discussing Smart Cities – Inclusive & Empathic. This is an invitation only event that gathers experts in foresight, thought leadership, futurism, urban planning, social entrepreneurship & change agents to find solutions to some of the critical barriers that stop us from progressing in our society and making cities livable for our future generation. This is part of my ongoing activities within the Creative Leadership Platform (formerly DesignersDNA).
Since Wednesday is only Day Zero there is more to come. On Thursday and Friday I will join the Design Thinking Conference ‘Through Different Eyes”. It is the second edition and just like last year there will be a wide range of different speakers and activities.
It will be an exciting, exhilarating, immersive and energy-consuming and -producing couple of days. I will probably meet some people I met last year and obviously some new acquaintances will be in the process as well. Combine this with a couple of days in the capital in a small hotel at the Prinsengracht and you see why I am looking forward to this.
The goal of this knowledge seeking adventure is off course to be able to implement these newest insights into the workshops as I have been giving them this last month. Since I know what to expect of the conference from last year, I expect to have a much greater learning experience.
So keep an eye out for any updates these next couple of days. It’s going to be fun. If in the meantime you would like to know more about design thinking, workshops or innovation management, feel free to reach out to me.

Today with 30+ people from the province innovation ecosystem paying a visit to imec Leuven. Seeing the world leader in open innovation for r&d in IC and digital technology. 4000 researchers from 80 countries brought together in over 30 years of development. €2B invested in cleanroom infrastructure etc.
Day 2 with Vicarvision. Working on Stakeholder mapping, Target groups and Persona’s. From there we can move into new Value Propositions based on various products, markets and customers. Energy remains high and we can also iterate on certain models to make the canvasses better suited for the specific questions that Vicarvision has.
To me this is one of the strengths of the methodology. That with a few tweaks in the canvas you can even make it more personally attractive to this specific group.
Again great working with @joyceoomen and @hugobakkenist
